GPS Waypoint Navigator Instructions -- Motorola e5 (Android)

Scenario:

You have decided to hike T5005 Benson Ridge Trail in the Sacramento Ranger District.  You want to use your smart phone to follow the trail and record your hike..  During the hike you see a lovely meadow off to the side of the trail, and you leave T5005 to enjoy that meadow.  At the end of the hike, you decide to share the route for this lovely "extra hike" with friends.  You then email the gpx file for the hike you recorded to them, and they download to their smart phones and follow your route.

There are several skills here: (1) Downloading a gpx file from this website, (2)  Importing the gpx file to GPS Waypoint Navigator, (3) Following that route, (4) Recording the actual route that you hike, (5) Emailing your gpx file to your friends, and (6)  Downloading the gpx file from the email.

(1) Downloading a gpx file from this website

1A.          Open Chrome

1B.          Go to lincoln-nf-trails.org

1C.          Any district, any index, go to far right hand column.  Note:  Instruction 1D only works from downloads from an html page such as an index page.  It does not work for a pdf page such as the main trail descriptions.

1D.          Long press on the link for the desired gpx file

1E.          A menu opens, press “Download link” to download the selected gpx ftile

(2)  Importing the gpx file to GPS Waypoint Navigator

2A.          Open GPS Waypoints Navigator. Press the “hammer “ in the lower left corner.

2B..          Press “Import KML/KMZ/GPX file”. Press the fie name that you want to import.

2C.          Press “No” on the $ question

2D.          A “Trails Found” list appears.  Select the trails you want to import (Press in the faint box to left of trail name)

2E.           Press "Import Selected".

(3) Following that route

3A.        From the GPS Waypoints Navigator man menu, press “Trails”

3B.        The “Trail Manager” menu appears.  At this point you probably want to press “Map Trail”.  Note: Trail properties such as color and width can be adjusted from “Settings” on the GPS Waypoint Navigator main screen

3C.       On the upper left hand side of the screen, the “lightning bolt” toggles to display the trail or not.

3D.        The “Menu” box allows you to change the underlying map.

(4) Recording the actual route that you hike

4A.          To record a hike, press the red circle on the middle right hand side GPS Waypoint Navigator main screen.  A screen will open for you to name the resulting gpx file.  Note:  While the device is recording, the red light at the upper left hand      corner will flash. 

4B.          Hike and have a great time.  When you have finished the hike,  press the red square on the middle right hand side to stop recording.

(5) Emailing your gpx file to your friends

5A.          Press “Trails” on the GPS Waypoint Navigator main screen to open the “Trail Manager” screen.

5B.          Press the name of the Trail you wish to transfer.

5C.          I use “Email the trail”.  Press this.  Press gpx.   Note: “KML” provides a file that can be read by Google Earth..  Use this if you wish.

5D.          Press “Export Trails”.

5E            Press “Gmail”.  Note: I use Gmail, and I have installed the Gmail app on my smart phone.  You can use any mail app you want, but I cannot tell you  how to make it work .

5F.          Enter an email address and send.  Note: GPS Waypoint Navigator always names the file trails.gpx and always titles the email "My Trails" .  You will need inform the recipients so that they can rename this file appropriately after they download the file.

(6)  Downloading and using the gpx file from the email.  [These instructions assume that the recipient has a Motorola e5 (Androidd) and is using the Gmail app.]

6A.          Open the "My Trails" email.

6B.          Press the “down arrow” shown to the right of the trails.gpx file name.  This will download the file to the “Files” app.

6C          Follow steps (2). (3), and (4)..
